...When you own a canoe.
Saturday, Kurt and I took a little road trip to Memphis to pick up our new toy (and some Thai food). We'd been wanting a canoe ever since our friend, Nick, brought his over to our house for a little yard party that we had last year. Needless to say, it was a big hit--with our guests and with us. Now that we have what amounts to two ponds, it seemed obvious that we were in need of a canoe of our own.

We christened our new Old Town with the help of our friends April and Chris and their son, Jonah, Saturday night. I'm telling you, there's nothing like a campfire and dinner by the pond, prefaced by a little paddling in the canoe.
And so you know, Jerry Lee has taken to riding in the canoe. He's a good little passenger, too. Jackson, on the other hand, is content to sit in the yard and watch.

I carried an Old Town Discovery 17 (it was red) all over Mississippi.
If you want some really good paddling in Mississippi, hit Okatoma Creek, near Seminary, during the spring. The paddling is pretty good with a couple of really nice natural drops.
Summer is good as well. A really nice float any time of year, but in summer the water can be a bit low.
Although, based on photographic evidence, your homefolks could use a lesson or two in how to paddle a canoe.
Just sayin' is all.....

Hi Amy, I love your art! and am inspired by your little bit of heaven in Mississippi. I am a new-ish transplant to Oxford and hope someday to wholeheartedly embrace this part of the world in the way that you seem to. I have one burning question: where do you go for Thai food in Memphis??
bitterman: thanks for the droppin'-in-the-water tips! we're looking forward to toting this thing hither and yon, although enjoying it in our front yard is pretty darn satisfying. btw, can't speak for the paddlers in the photo, but i think they just wanted to look after the little guy in the middle.
tiffany: thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and share such kind words. our favorite place for thai in memphis is chao praya, across from the hickory ridge mall. there's a great asian grocery next door, too.
